Emotions while learning
Influence of emotions on the learning process and on performance
How do positive and negative emotions influence learning and its outcome?
Learning is always the interplay of cognition, emotion and motivation. Emotions play an important role in this. Positive emotions can increase engagement in learning, while negative ones such as anxiety can have a limiting effect on learning and performance. However, in moderation, anxiety can have a positive influence if it encourages learners to prepare well. Furthermore, emotions are closely linked to goal orientations and motivation to learn. Teachers should therefore pay attention to learners' emotions and create a supportive learning environment.
Current projects in the department are focussing on how students learn in different subjects and how their learning achievement goals are related to their choice of learning strategies and their performance.
